Mazda CX-50 driving through the snow

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 compact crossover is the perfect vehicle choice for the active go anywhere, do anything type family.

Mazda's off-road-ready CX-50 offers refinement, luxury and versatility in a modern and stylishly capable five seater compact crossover. With plenty of strong contenders in this class of vehicle out there for buyers to take their pick from, the relatively new CX-50 serves up more than enough to grab your attention.

Vehicle buying decisions are oftentimes just plain exhausting as you seek to get the most bang for your buck.

With this in mind, we share in some detail all that the 2023 Mazda CX-50 brings to the party.

What's New for 2023?

Launched into the US marketplace in 2022, this relatively brand-new nameplate from Mazda slots into the Mazda family of refined and upscale SUVs alongside its CX-5 sibling.

For the 2023 model year, this still new modern design remains pretty much unchanged, besides a change in exterior paint colors.

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is offered in 10 trim levels: S, Select, Preferred, Preferred Plus, Premium, Premium Plus, Turbo, Turbo Meridian, Turbo Premium and Turbo Premium Plus.

Two versions of Mazda's SKYACTIV 2.5L engine are found in the lineup.

Premier Exterior

The Mazda CX-50 is in fact based on the same platform as that of the subcompact CX-30 crossover and the Mazda 3 compact car.

Slightly larger than Mazda's CX-5, the newer CX-50 offers buyers a slightly more rugged alternative to Mazda's SUV lineup.

The exterior of the 2023 Mazda CX-50 is immediately noticeable with its more pronounced fenders and a slimmer front grille. The exterior wears squared off styling with body cladding, wheel arch trim, and a lowish roof design to make for easier loading on the convenient fitted roof racks.

Across the board, all CX-50 trims feature LED headlights and LED daytime running lights.

Key standard exterior appointments on the CX-50 include:

  • Black dual power side mirrors with LED turn signal indicators
  • Body-colored rear roof spoiler
  • Dual exhaust outlets with a bright finish
  • Rear privacy glass
  • AWD badge

Stylish 17-inch alloy wheels are standard fitment on all trim levels and there are 20-inch wheels available.

2023 Mazda CX-50 Dimensions

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 measures in at 185.8 inches long, 72.9 inches wide, with the side mirrors folded in and 63.5 inches high. Dimensions that keep the CX-50 compact enough to deal with tight parking spaces yet still offer a spacious enough interior for extended travel.

The wheelbase measures 110.8 inches, and the 2023 CX-50, with its more rugged off-road-ready persona, offers a useful minimum of 8.3 inches of ground clearance.

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 has up to 31.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seats, growing to 56.3 cubic feet once the 60/40-split rear seats are folded down.

2023 Mazda CX-50 Interior

The CX-50 sports a considerably upmarket cabin with seats in black leatherette. Upper trims receive heated and ventilated front seats.

The 2023 Mazda CX-50 seats up to five passengers in its very upscale cabin, which is both comfortable and elegantly finished with quality materials and craftsmanship.

Matching the more rugged-oriented exterior of the CX-50, the upmarket cabin is finished with some unique and distinctive design details, drawing inspiration from the CX-50's target audience of families that enjoy an active outdoors and adventurous lifestyle. The seat stitching for example is in the pattern of hiking boot laces plus the unique finish found on the center console that imitates a telephoto lens's textured grip.

Lower trims feature seats that are upholstered in black half leatherette while top trim levels receive high quality leather seating surfaces. Depending on the trim chosen, the front seats are both heated and ventilated plus rear seat passengers can also enjoy the available heated seats.

A 7-inch partial digital gauge display is fitted on all CX-50s, and there is a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and convenient push-button start.

Standard key interior appointments in the CX-50 lineup are such as:

  • Speed-sensitive power door locks with 2-stage unlocking
  • Mazda advanced keyless entry and start system
  • Power windows with a one-touch down/up feature
  • Dual-covered illuminated visor vanity mirrors
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control.

Infotainment features are the standard 8.8-inch full-color display with the Mazda Connect system accessed via the center console-mounted rotary controller and volume knob. AppleCarPlay and Android Auto integration are also standard.

Mazda CX-50 Performance

Powering the lower tier trims of the range is a four-cylinder 2.5 L SKYACTIV engine that makes 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque married to the standard across the range six-speed automatic transmission with an i-ACTIV all-wheel drive system sending drive to all four corners making the CX-50 a pretty capable off-roader.

Those buyers with a heavy right foot will enjoy the added oomph that the turbo trims offer. The turbo trims make use of a turbo-boosted version of the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that now produces 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft torque when using regular gas or a more powerful 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft when filling up with 93 octane premium fuel.
